Read clause by clause, Xunzi is running an elimination argument: standing high does not lengthen the arm; shouting with the wind does not strengthen the voice; the one who borrows a carriage does not have better feet; the one who borrows a boat cannot swim. None of these tools changes the person's endowment — yet each changes where that person can arrive.
Hence the conclusion: the gentleman's endowment is no different from anyone else's. The difference lies in being good at making use of things.
“The gentleman is not different by nature; he is simply good at making use of things.”
英译(本站):I once spent all day thinking, and it was not worth a moment of learning. I once stood on tiptoe to see far, and it was not worth climbing high for a broad view. Waving from a height — the arm is not longer, yet what is seen reaches farther. Shouting with the wind — the voice is not louder, yet what is heard is clearer. One who borrows a carriage and horses does not gain swift feet, yet he travels a thousand li. One who borrows a boat and oars cannot swim, yet he crosses rivers and lakes. The gentleman is not different by nature; he is simply good at making use of things.
Xunzi · “Encouraging Learning” (勸學) · translation by this site为什么我把这句当作方法论
- What it denies is not effort but determinism about talent. Xunzi does not say effort is unnecessary; he says that attributing a gap to innate ability is usually a misdiagnosis. The real variable is leverage.
- It elevates “things” to the same rank as “persons”. For early Chinese thought this is a striking move: the boundary of human capability is extensible, and the way it extends is by borrowing external conditions.
- It is operational. Being good at making use of things is not an attitude but a skill — recognising what is worth borrowing, knowing how to borrow it, and composing what you have borrowed. All of it can be trained.
Twenty-three centuries ago, Xunzi gave one of the earliest clear statements of tool-augmented intelligence. Carriages and boats were his “things”. Models, tools and plugins are ours.
The principle gains weight today, because when the borrowed thing itself carries intelligence, borrowing stops being mere amplification and becomes recomposition of capability. The gap between someone who uses tools well and someone who does not no longer grows additively.
For me this is concrete: the analysers in the laboratory are “things”; so is the LIS, so are statistical methods, and so are models and plugins. What separates people is not how much I have memorised, but whether I can organise these into a solution for a real problem.
